Promoting quality agriculture
Alsatian agriculture is extremely diverse: cereals, hops, tobacco, fruit, dairy, meat, vegetables, horticulture, farm produce, etc. Some of its produce, like hops, cabbage for making the famous "choucroute", tobacco and quetsches, is very specialised and specific to our region.
However, viticulture continues to be vital to the economy in our region, carrying our expertise, which has been recognised for decades, well beyond our borders. The wines of Alsace have continued to grow in quality and reputation.
Region Alsace encourages the development of environmentally friendly practices. The livestock and arable industries can therefore count on quality products produced by organic farming. “Alsace Qualité” closely monitors the promotion of these regional products and enjoys official quality labelling.
This also includes the modernisation of installations and the optimisation of equipment while at same time making farmers aware of environmental issues, particularly in livestock breeding and dairy farming.
Specificities of the forestry/wood industry
All businesses in the forestry/wood industry are now committed to the prospect of sustainable development and Alsace is taking up a number of challenges: new forms of silviculture, development of operating and wood processing methods, certification of the forest and its products, management of wooded landscapes.
Furthermore, the great storm of 26 December 1999 required extraordinary clean-up and replanting measures, which are still ongoing.
