A multitude of cultural activities
In Alsace, we are not short of professional initiatives intended to encourage the emergence and development of cultural events throughout the territory. A fair number of them are sponsored by the Region, which considers them the expression of both the social graces in Alsace and what makes it attractive.
The Region encourages literary creation and fosters the revelation of new talent, new forms of expression and new cultural undertakings by devoting particular attention to supporting audiovisual activities. Regional involvement in the arts also takes in the cultural life of secondary school pupils and apprentices and the hosting of writers and artists in residence.
In order to ensure the harmonious distribution of centres of culture in its territory, the Region finally supports the development of theatres and helps to provide them with stage equipment. It supports cinemas by providing aid to the towns where they are set up, to associations and to cinema operators for their modernisation programmes.
A varied heritage
Marked by history, Alsace possesses a significant architectural heritage (castles, churches, temples, monasteries...) that the Region is keen to safeguard. It contributes to the restoration and management of historic cultural buildings and castles as well as making their ruins safe. It supports the enrichment of the collections of a network of 80 museums by subsidising their acquisitions. It encourages the flourishing expression of cultural life fostered by almost 4000 associations.
The advantage of the regional Alsatian language
The Alsatian language is undoubtedly one of the most enduring regional languages in France. Not surprising therefore that the global giant, Microsoft, chose it in 2006 to test an Alsatian language version of Microsoft Office! The Region supports the use of the Alsatian language by encouraging any number of campaigns to conserve and promote the regional linguistic heritage. Along the same lines, it supports operations to install bilingual signposting, particularly on street name plates in towns and villages.
